Many organizations consider Microsoft 365 (initially known as Microsoft Office 365) to be one of their most critical business applications and, naturally, want to ensure that their data is protected. Even as a SaaS product, Microsoft 365 is susceptible to many of the same types of data loss events as on-premises data. Some events,

such as ransomware attacks, originate outside the organization, while others can occur internally, such as users accidentally deleting files or overwriting data.

Given the potential for accidental or malicious data loss events, regular backups are vitally important (Microsoft stresses this point in its Microsoft 365 service agreement). But choosing the right backup solution can be difficult: there are many options, and the right choice will vary depending upon the organization’s needs.

Microsoft Shared Responsibility

Organizations understand the value of backing up their data on-premises, but often don't invest in the same way in protecting SaaS-based data. Many IT leaders assume that their cloud providers have "insured backup" - a dangerous assumption that can lead to data loss. Cloud provider terms and conditions state that data protection in the cloud is a shared responsibility between you (the customer) and the cloud provider. The Microsoft Services Agreement takes this a step further, stating that you should “regularly back up any of your content and data that you store on the Services or store using “Third Party Apps and Services.”

Ultimately, it is the customer's responsibility to protect their applications and data running in a public cloud, regardless of provider. The shared responsibility in the cloud published by Microsoft is a good reference point for these concepts. This leaves the customer at a critical decision point - How do I efficiently and reliably protect my assets that reside in the cloud? While the question may seem simple at first glance, it is in fact quite complex.

EVENTS & REPORTS

The Rubrik Polaris Events tab identifies, isolates, and prioritizes incidents with a unified view of global Rubrik events. This enables customers to find point-in-time events with easy-to-use filters and real-time search.

The Events tab shows information on system events by event types and object types, such as a user mailbox or OneDrive.

Rubrik Polaris also has customizable reports about application data protection and Polaris underlying infrastructure. The Reporting tab enables you to create views of the most commonly used system metrics.

Customers use the data gathered in the reports to perform audits and data management planning. The figure below displays compliance status of the selected data source. The example shows the number of mailboxes in SLA Domain compliance compared to those that are not. You can click an out of compliance object, such as a mailbox, to dig deeper into details to troubleshoot.

RESTORE OPTIONS

In the event of data loss, whether accidental or malicious, you can quickly browse through point-in-time snapshots and restore an entire mailbox or OneDrive or individual folders and items. You have the option to restore to the original

location or export to another user’s mailbox or OneDrive. Additionally, Rubrik Polaris provides role-based access control, enabling you to designate granular user permissions over data access. This will be implemented in the implementation phase together.
